In a tragic turn of events, the cause of death has been determined for Jamie Cail.
The swimmer, 42, died of “fentanyl intoxication with aspiration of gastric content,” said the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department in a news release.
An autopsy report from the U.S. Virgin Islands Office of Medical Examiner was concluded on August 22.
Cail was found dead by her boyfriend in their home of February 21, after he returned from a night out. Her boyfriend took her to a nearby hospital where Cail was pronounced dead upon arrival
She was an accomplished swimmer who won a gold medal in the 800m free relay at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships as a member of the U.S. team.
In addition to that gold, she won a silver medal at the 1998-9 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Brazil, according to Boston.com
Cail was also high school champion in the 200m individual medley and the 500 free. She went to swim collegiately at the University of Southern California and the University of Maine.
