After the European Games in Poland, the final countdown began this week for two other traditional continental events, which will also be an opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. In September, it will be the turn of the huge continent of Asia, which will hold its multisport event in Hangzhou. And then, from October 20 to November 5, the Pan-American fire will be lit in Santiago, the Chilean capital.
A little more than 100 days before the start of the Pan American Games, a list of prominent figures confirmed for the event was announced today, including Olympic champions in Tokyo 2020 to world medalists. The organization announced them in a statement and under the motto of Team Panam Sports, with the intention of valuing the continental sports festival, which will begin on October 20 with the opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Chile.
The 2023 edition of Team Panam Sports is led by Rebeca Andrade (artistic gymnastics - Brazil), Maggie Mac Neil (Swimming-Canada), Alejandra Orozco (Diving-México), Daniel Dhers (BMX Freestyle-Venezuela), Mijaín López (Wrestling-Cuba), Anderson Peters (Athletics-Granada), Agustina Albertario (Hockey-Argentina), Marileidy Paulino (Athletics-Dominican Republic), Ángelo Caro (Skateboarding-Peru) and the duo of Marco and Esteban Grimalt (beach volley-Chile). These 11 stars include 15 Olympic medals, 41 world medals and 14 Pan-American medals.
“We are very happy to confirm the first Olympic and world stars who will be part of the most important multi-sport event in our continent, such as the Pan American Games in Santiago 2023. These outstanding athletes not only shine in competitions, but also outside of them, inculcating the values that we at Panam Sports want to transmit to society as a whole. Seeing them participate in Santiago fills us with pride and emotion,” said the president of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic.
Although Santiago 2023 represents an enormous opportunity for several athletes to qualify for the next Olympic Games, figures such as Maggie Mac Neil, Rebeca Andrade, Anderson Peters and Marileidy Paulino will have possibilities in other instances and can now arrive in October with a guaranteed ticket to Paris 2024. In the case of swimming, the window for making the minimum marks is now open and the Fukuoka World Cup will be a time of the season where the conditions may be met to establish those records required by World Aquatics. The same goes for javelin thrower Peters, who will defend his world titles won in 2019 and 2022 in Budapest, and for Marileidy Paulino in the 400 meters flat. In the case of Andrade, the gymnast will try together with her teammates from the Brazilian team to secure the Olympic ticket at the World Cup in Antwerp, which will take place in early October.
Next Wednesday, when it is exactly 100 days until the start of the Pan American Games, tickets for the different sports and sessions will be on sale.
