Xi Jinping, President of China, will remain in that position for at least five more years, taking him through 2027.
Since 1982 China has adhered to a two-term limit for presidents, however in 2018 Xi removed the two-term limit clause from the nation’s constitution, allowing him to serve as president for as long as he wishes.
Xi became President in March 2013.
His continued presidency could severely impact China’s sporting calendar, as Xi has China under a zero-tolerance policy regarding COVID-19. This has made hosting major events very difficult, and often times leads to the cancellation or postponement of events.
Although the country was able to hold the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games last February, there were very strict guidelines with regards to COVID-19. The National Hockey League did not send players to compete in Beijing.
Formula 1 has not raced in China since 2019, while Hangzhou was all set to host the Asian Games last month, but that has been pushed back to 2023 - for now. The International University Sports Federation has also pushed back their Summer World University Games in Chengdu from 2021 to 2023.
There is no guarantee either event will take place as scheduled. A further postponement for either one seems unlikely as well.
Russia and North Korea were quick to congratulate Xi on another term in office.
