On Wednesday USA Gymnastics announced their final roster for competition at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, England set to take place October 29 thru November 6, 2022.
After a two-day selection camp at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Gymnastics announced that newcomers Asher Hong and Colt Walker and 2021 world pommel horse champion Stephen Nedoroscik will join Brody Malone and Donnell Whittenburg to round out the five man roster. Yul Moldauer, who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be the alternate.
Whittenburg and Malone were the first two individuals to secure their spots on the team after placing first and second, respectively, in the all-around competition at the U.S. Championships in August.
Hong, 18, became the youngest athlete from the U.S. to compete at a world event since former Olympic silver medalist and Parallel bars world champion Daniel Leyva in 2009.
Although Hong had the lowest total of the four men during the camp, he was still selected over Tokyo 2020 Olympians Shane Wiskus and Yul Moldauer. Walker, who had the highest all-around total at camp will make his world championships debut.
At the Liverpool World Championships, the U.S. will vie for not only world titles but for passage to Paris 2024. The top three men’s and women’s teams will earn their National Olympic Committee’s berth for the five-gymnast team at the Games.
The women’s team will be selected during their camp in Houston from October 22-23. Some of the notable gymnasts that will be participating in the event include: Leanne Wong 2021 world all-around silver medalist, Olympic gold medalist Jade Carey and world all-around silver medalist Jordan Chiles.
