The eyes of the sporting world will be focused on Qatar this November and December when the small Arab country hosts the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Qatar also has their sights on hosting the Asian Cup next year, and in a bit of potential foreshadowing, was recently awarded the U-23 2024 Asian Cup, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed.
They were chosen to host the 16-country tournament over the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Uzbekistan.
The race to host the 2023 Asian Cup is between Qatar and South Korea after Australia, which is hosting the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, withdrew from contention.
Qatar’s latest successful bid is significant in the race for the 2023 Asian Cup hosting rights. Last month Australia, who will co-host next year’s Women’s World Cup, withdrew from the bidding race after closer scrutiny of the bidding requirements.
Indonesia has also expressed interest in hosting the 2023 Asian Cup, but given the football tragedy last weekend where 125 fans were killed during a stampede in East Java, they seem a longshot at best to be chosen.
The top three teams in the U-23 2024 Asian Cup tournament in Qatar will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The team who finishes in fourth will be in a playoff with a team from Africa for the final spot in Paris.
The AFC is scheduled to select the host of the 2023 Asian Cup on October 17.
