In an extraordinary session of the ORDECA Executive Committee held this week, it has been decided that the the XII Central American Games, which were to be held in Guatemala and Costa Rica from October 27 to November 13. will be cancelled.
In view of the governance situation facing the Guatemala Olympic Committee (COG) the ORDECA committee concurred with the IOC findings in that:
- ORDECA adheres to and expresses their full support for the content of the letter sent by the International Olympic Committee, which reiterates that National Olympic Committees must be free from interference in their internal governance and operations to be in accord with the principles of autonomy within the Olympic Movement established in the Olympic Charter.
- That in view of the governance situation that affects the normal committee operations of the Guatemala Olympic Committee and in accordance with the Olympic Charter, in the face of administrative insecurity and financial concerns the situation entails, it has been decided to cancel the XIl edition of the Central American Sports Games which were to be hosted by Guatemala and Costa Rica.
- ORDECA statutes will proceed with the opening of new applications for host cities in 2023 and thus have a sufficient period of time to organize in preparation for the next edition of the Central American Games scheduled to be held in 2025.
In these fairs, which in the Olympic cycle are the prelude to the Central American and Caribbean Games, athletes from Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama were called to participate.
The Central American Games were to be the first stage of the Paris24 Olympic cycle which include athletes from Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
The goal of the Games was to create a platform for the region in uniting people from different backgrounds with the motto “It is what + unites us” which aims to break down the barriers that prevent people from being able to come together.
