Richard Peterkin, 74, of the tiny, island nation of St. Lucia was named an honorary life member of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Tuesday.
The CGF noted Peterkin’s success in helping the Caribbean nation obtain recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1993.
In fact he was an IOC member from 2009 to 2018, and also served as president of the St. Lucia Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association for two decades.
St. Lucia first participated in the Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996 and has sent at least two athletes to every Summer Olympic that followed. They had five athletes compete in Tokyo 2020.
The country has yet to win an Olympic medal and has never competed in the Winter Games.
St. Lucia has enjoyed greater success in the Commonwealth Games. First competing in 1962, they have appeared in every Games since 1994 and have claimed four medals, including a gold by Levern Spencer in the women’s high jump at the Gold Coast 2018 Games. They also have three bronze medals in 2002, 2010 and 2014.
