World champion decathlete Garrett Scantling of the U.S. was provisionally suspended by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for his third violation in missing a drug test, and failure to provide necessary ‘whereabouts’ in submission of his test results.
“Unfortunately, there’s no leniency for being forgetful, you have to accept responsibility and move on,” Scantling said on social media. “What’s next? We shall see!”
If an athlete has three whereabouts failures within 18 months, they face suspension. These failures can be caused by not providing the necessary information to the authorities, or not being present for a drug test.
At the U.S. National Championships in May, Scantling scored 8,867 points, the world’s highest decathlon total this year and the seventh best all-time.
Despite his impressive performance at the nationals, Scantling was not named to compete on the U.S. roster for the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The three American decathletes who are expected to compete at the world championships in Eugene, are Steven Bastien, Kyle Garland, and Zach Ziemek.
