Earlier this week we reported Henrik Stenson could be stripped of his European Ryder Cup captaincy if he signed with the rival LIV Golf Series, and on Wednesday Ryder Cup Europe confirmed Stenson is out.

“In light of decisions made by Henrik in relation to his personal circumstances, it has become clear he will not be able to fulfill certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe that he had committed to prior to his announcement as captain on Tuesday March 15, 2022, and it is therefore not possible for him to continue in the role of captain,” Ryder Cup Europe said in a statement.

Stenson, winner of the Open Championship in 2016 at Royal Troon, told DP World Tour officials on Tuesday he was joining Greg Norman’s LIV Golf Series. He’s expected to make his debut at the LIV tournament at Trump National in New Jersey next week.

No captain has been named yet to replace Stenson, with England’s Luke Donald and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie among the favorites.

When Stenson was named Ryder Cup captain, he signed a contract saying he would only play on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. His deal with LIV could exceed $40 million.

American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson has been adamant no LIV affiliated players will be a part of his team.

The 2023 Ryder Cup will be September 29 to October 1 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club outside Rome.
