As the 11th World Games came to a close this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama, a special ceremony was held to honor and support the athletes of Ukraine affected by the ongoing conflict.
The World Games committee presented a check on the final day of competition for $54,000 to support athletes and sports in Ukraine.
The World Games committee decided to contribute $1 from every ticket and item of merchandise sold at the World Games to the Olympic Solidarity Fund to benefit the Ukrainian community.
Sergey Bubka, the President of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee was in attendance and very moved by the contribution.
“Solidarity all over the world for Ukraine is so huge. It’s amazing,” said Bubka during the check presentation ceremony. “Thank you very much for your support, for you believing in us.
“We will never forget your support. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, and this is something very special.”
