The Iranian NOC President, Dr. Seye Reza Salehi Amiri, along with Dr. Seyed Hamid Sajjadi, the Minister of Sports and Youth have been in Lausanne, Switzerland this week meeting with several international federations along with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.
Iran’s international relations director, Farid Fattahian has confirmed to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) that Komeil Ghasemi who had originally won the bronze medal, has now officially ascended to become the gold medal winner for the 120 kg weight class of the London 2012 Olympics.
Dr. Salehi Amiri received possession of the gold medal on behalf of Ghasemi, who now becomes the most decorated wrestler in Iranian history.
Iran was notified last year the IOC had concluded their doping investigation of two Olympic wrestlers: Arthur Taymazov from Uzbekistan and Davit Modzamanashvili of Georgia. Taymazov had won the gold and Modzamanashvili the silver.
Taymazov, who defeated Ghasemi in the men’s freestyle 120 kg semifinals, had his results vacated for the second time in his career after being previously stripped of his Beijing 2008 gold medal at 120 kg following a re-testing of his samples in April 2017.
