Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will be allowed to defend his U.S. Open title in New York later this summer.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) which runs the U.S. Open released a statement Tuesday saying all Russian and Belarusian athletes will be allowed to compete.

“We recognize that each organization has had to deal with unique circumstances that affect their decisions,” the USTA said in their statement. “Based on our own circumstances, the USTA will allow all eligible players, regardless of nationality, to compete at the 2022 U.S. Open.”

All Russian and Belarusian players will have to compete as a neutral athlete under a neutral flag, just like at the French Open earlier this month.

Wimbledon, which begins in two weeks, will not allow Russian or Belarusian players to compete. Both the men’s and women’s professional tours have spoken out against the ban.

Daniil Medvedev of Russia won the U.S. Open men’s singles title last year, defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets to capture his first major title. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus is a two-time Grand Slam winner who reached the finals of the U.S. Open three times, most recently in 2020.

The U.S. Open begins August 29 in New York and runs through September 11.
