With an eye on gender equality, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved a total of 13 weight categories for boxing at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Paris 2024 Games will see seven weight classes for men and six for women. This is slightly different from the Tokyo 2020 Games which saw eight weight classes for men and five for women.

The men’s weight classes are: 51kg, 57kg, 63.5kg, 71kg, 80kg, 92kg and +92kg.

The women’s weight classes will be: 50kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 66kg and 75kg.

Several countries made Olympic history at Tokyo 2020 and will be looking for similar success in Paris. Bulgaria won their first women’s boxing gold medal, while Busenaz Surmeneli accomplished the same for Turkey. Athletes from the Philippines had their best ever showing with three medals (two silver and a bronze), while Cuba and Great Britain won multiple gold medals in the ring.

The Paris 2024 Games may be the last time boxing features at the Olympic Games as the IOC has expressed serious concerns over the sport’s governance and its readiness for Paris. Boxing is currently not included on the LA28 Olympic Program.
