Reigning decathlon champion Garrett Scantling broke his own personal best by scoring 8,867 points to win the event at John McDonnell Field in Arkansas, on Saturday. With his result Scantling becomes the third-ranked all-time US decathlete.

After taking the lead during the first eight events, Scantling was able to set a new world record. He also bested the John McDonnell Field record set by Ashton Eaton. He also heads up the US team for the upcoming world championships.

Scantling who placed fourth at the Tokyo Olympics, improves his position in the US record books to third, behind Dan O’Brien and Ashton Eaton. His victory moves him to seventh on the all-time world list, passing champions Tom Pappas, Trey Hardee and Bryan Clay.

Also making the team for the 2022 World Championships was Kyle Garland, who set a new collegiate record to setting an overall personal best with 8,720 points.

Garland also moves to No. 7 / No. 8 among American performers in the event history.

Joining Garland and Scantling will be Olympic sixth-place finisher Zach Ziemek. Ziemek, placed third with a lifetime best mark of 8,573pts.

On the women’s side Anna Hall continued her impressive performance this season by setting a new personal best of 6,458 points to win the Combined Events Championship.

Hall’s score was the second-best in NCAA history and also earned her a ticket to the World Championships, this summer in Eugene Oregon from July 15-24.

After the first day of the competition, Hall held a slight advantage over the rest of the field. She won the last three events of the day to secure the victory. Her time of 2:03.11 in the 800m was the fourth-fastest heptathlon time ever on the world list, which is also an American record for the event in the multi competition.

The 2019 NCAA champion, Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler finished second totaling with 6,184pts, and Michelle Atherley, finished third with a score of 6154 points.

The Tokyo Olympic Stadium will be the site of the Continental Tour meet this weekend headlined by 100m world champion Christian Coleman and Olympic 400m hurdles silver medalist Rai Benjamin.
