Elaine Thompson-Herah became the first Jamaican to win the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award, joining the ranks of other Olympic champions like Serena Williams, Simone Biles and Lindsey Vonn.
She dominated the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last summer, winning gold in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay.
Thompson-Herah is the second Jamaican athlete to win the prestigious award. Usain Bolt was named Laureus Sportsman of the Year four times, most recently in 2017.
“I know Usain has won Laureus Awards before, so to bring this trophy back home to the Caribbean, to Jamaica, is very special,” she said. “I’m humbled to be honored for this award, and to be amongst all those athletes in different sports.”
Thompson-Herah beat out fellow sprinter Allyson Felix, along with Ashleigh Barty, Katie Ledecky, Emma McKeon and Alexia Putellas.
Jamaica’s Sports Minister Olivia Grange expressed her pride on Thompson-Herah’s historic year.
“This latest success for the fastest woman alive is a tribute to her hard work and sacrifice.”
