The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC ) announced U.S. President Joe Biden will welcome over 800 Olympians and Paralympians from the Beijing Winter and Tokyo Summer Olympics to the White House. The ceremony will take place on May 4.

Sarah Hirshland, the CEO of the USOPC, said the event will be the first of its kind which will bring together delegations from both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

“Not an easy task, but I think we’ve proven Team USA and the team behind the team is more than capable of doing hard things,” Hirshland told reporters.

Biden had previously met virtually with the Tokyo 2020 Summer athletes, yet after a 12-month postponement of the Summer Olympics due to the pandemic, the U.S. Summer delegation will finally be honored with their presidential visit.

The White House has a long tradition of welcoming championship athletes and Olympic teams to Washington, dating back over 100 years.

“For athletes (who) take so much pride in representing the United States, this is a really great honor,” said Hirshland.

“It’s also a great opportunity for them to reconnect outside the Games environment and for us to gather and truly celebrate all that they accomplished.”
