Elite athletes won’t be the only runners hitting the streets of Eugene, Oregon this summer for the World Athletics Championships. Amateur runners will also get a chance to run a five-kilometer section of the men’s marathon course as part of partnership between the local organizing committee and ASICS.
The race, dubbed the ASICS Uplift Oregon 5K, will take place on Sunday, July 17 during the men’s marathon. It will be open to an anticipated 2,000 pre-registered amateur runners.
Local organizers have yet to specify which part of the men’s marathon course will be utilized for the race.
The partnership between local organizers and ASICS will also extend to the ASICS Uplift Oregon 5K Fan Festival. The festival area will be located near the finish line and include interactive recovery stations, food vendors, athlete appearances, and big screen viewing options for the men’s and women’s marathons during the World Athletics Championships.
Richard Sullivan, President and CEO of ASICS North America, commented, “we are thrilled to offer runners this one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience the World Athletics Championships and create an environment for fans to join in the festivities with our fan festival just steps from the finish line.”
His enthusiasm was matched by James Tolputt, COO of Oregon22, LLC, who added, “this bespoke event is all about innovation and fan engagement, two of the main driving tenets of the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.”
“The incredible collaboration between the LOC and ASICS will enable us to bring to life a truly unique experience – one that will take place not just in the streets and parks of Eugene, but as part of the very footprint and fabric of these World Championships.”
Oregon22 will be the first time the World Athletics Championships are held in the United States. Eugene has long positioned itself as the spiritual home of track and field in the United States, earning the nickname of “TrackTown USA.”
The World Athletics Championships Oregon22 will run from July 15 to July 24, 2022. The men’s marathon will be contested on July 17, while the women’s marathon will take place a day later on July 18. Both races will start and finish outside of Autzen Stadium along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
