The sport of weightlifting will be introducing a new and exciting event to the streets of Lausanne, Switzerland this weekend.

The 1st International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Street Weightlifting competition will be taking over the streets of the Olympic capital on April 23. The event will feature 14 of the world’s best weightlifters, along with Olympians from Europe, South America and the Middle East.

The outdoor and city environment should provide an exciting venue.

“This format can bring weightlifting into town centers, and showcases the fun and competitive spirit of your sport,” said IWF Interim President Dr. Michael Irani. “We want to showcase how great our sport is in urban settings.”

The format will feature a mixed team format with two athletes from the same country competing against other teams.

Fellow Olympian Yazmin Stevens agrees.
