Bernard Lapasset, who led the International Rugby Board (IRB), and was part of the successful Paris 2024 bid committee, has been awarded with The Olympic Order.
Lapasset received his award at a ceremony held in his hometown of Tarbes, France over the Easter holiday. He was joined by Tony Estanguet, the head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, along with former president of the French Olympic Movement Denis Masseglia.
The ceremony for the award was originally scheduled for last year in Tokyo, but it was postponed due to the pandemic.
Although he has never been an official member of the International Olympic Committee, he was instrumental in getting the rugby 7s tournament into the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Lapasset, alongside Estanguet, was also part of the campaign to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Paris. After winning the bid, he stepped aside from his position due to health issues.
Before becoming the IRB’s chairman, Lapasset was the head of the organizing committee for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
Lapasset sits as an honorary the president of the organizing committee.
