Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir has claimed her second big win in less than a year after crossing the line first in the Boston Marathon.
The Kenyan, 28, was side-by-side with Ethiopia’s Ababel Yeshaneh over the final mile of the 26.2 mile course. The swapped the lead eight times before Jepchirchir was able to pull ahead and win by four seconds. Her final time was 2:21:01. Kenya’s Mary Ngugi was third for the second consecutive year.
“I was feeling she was strong. I pushed it,” said Jepchirchir. “I fell behind but I didn’t lose hope.”
The men’s side also featured a Kenyan hitting the line first, though with far less excitement than the women’s race.
Evans Chebet broke from the pack with about four miles to go and comfortably finished 30 seconds ahead of rival Gabriel Geay of Tanzania. The defending champion Benson Kipruto came in third. Chebet’s winning time was 2:06:51.
This was the first time the Boston Marathon was run in its traditional April spot on the calendar since 2019. Last year’s version was postponed to October, and the 2020 race was cancelled due to the pandemic.
