Northern Mariana Islands Governor Ralph DLG. Torres visited the Oleai Sports Complex in Saipan as local organizers continue preparatory work for the 2022 Pacific Mini Games.
Torres was accompanied on his visit to the Oleai Sports Complex by members of his staff and representatives of the local Permitting Agency. The Oleai Sports Compex is scheduled to host badminton, baseball, and athletics during the 2022 Pacific Mini Games.
The complex has been the site of major renovation work since the U.S Economic Development Administration approved a $21.2 million dollar grant last June to modernize the facility according to the Saipan Tribune. The grant included plans to construct an Olympic-size swimming pool, two International Tennis Federation (ITF) standard tennis courts, additional storage facilities, and other associated facilities, as well as the renovation of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Torres’ visit to the Oleai Sports Complex comes as the countdown clock continues to tick closer to the opening of the 2022 Pacific Mini Games.
“I wanted to check in on the state of the facilities as we near the Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games. This is the first time the NMI will be the host country for the Games, and I want to make sure we are ready,” said Torres.
Commenting on preparations, he added, “I applaud the efforts of the PMG Organizing Committee. Their dedication to put on this amazing event is remarkable. Further work is needed as we count down to the Games, but I am confident the work of the PMGOC, the sponsors and our government will create a spectacular event.”
Local organizers noted that preparations for the Games are on-going, with work being undertaken to renovate the beach volleyball venue and permit the va’a course.
The 2022 Pacific Mini Games are scheduled to open on June 17, and close on June 25, 2022.
