In response to the conflict in the Ukraine, organizers of the Boston Marathon have banned participants from Russia and Belarus from running in the 2022 race, even if they were previously approved to do so.

Aside from the marathon, the event also excludes athletes from Belarus and Russia who were previously approved to participate in the B.A.A.’s 5K race. However non-residents of Russia or Belarus who have registered will still be allowed to run.

‘Like so many around the world, we are horrified and outraged by what we have seen and learned from the reporting in Ukraine,’ B.A.A. president and CEO Tom Grilk said in a statement. ‘We believe that running is a global sport, and as such, we must do what we can to show our support to the people of Ukraine.’

The B.A.A.’s events this year, including the Boston Marathon, 5K, and the Invitational Mile, will not recognize affiliations or flags from Russia and Belarus nor have any of their professional athletes run in the race.

All participants from Ukraine who are registered for the marathon or 5K will be given a refund or the option to defer their registration.

Despite the dominance of Ethiopian and Kenyan runners over the last couple of decades, three Russian women have won the race: Olga Markova in 1992 and 1993, Svetlana Zakharova in 2003 and Lidiya Grigoryeva in 2007.
