The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set the competition schedule and weight classes for the weightlifting competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The weightlifting events for Paris 2024 for the men’s competition will be: 61kg, 73kg, 89kg, 102kg and 102+kg. For the women it will be 49kg, 59kg, 71kg, 81kg and 81+kg.

The bodyweight categories were put forward by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in December and accepted by the IOC.

In December 2020 the IOC announced weightlifting would have the highest quota reduction of any sport in the 2024 program. The Tokyo 2020 Games saw 14 events, seven for each gender, while in Paris the program will be 10 events, five for each gender.

The Paris 2024 Games will also see fewer athletes competing in weightlifting, with 120 weightlifters scheduled to participate, compared with 196 in Tokyo and 260 in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and London 2012.

“It’s helpful to have final clarification of the weight classes to be contested in Paris as far out as we can,” said USA Weightlifting Senior Director of Sport Performance and Coaching Education Mike Gattone. “Prospective Olympians and their personal coaches will now be armed with knowledge to start making informed decisions on what bodyweight category gives them the best opportunity to qualify.”

The Tokyo 2020 Games saw several firsts for weightlifting as New Zealand’s Laura Hubbard became the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics in a different gender classification than assigned at birth, while Hidilyn Diaz became the first Olympic gold medalist in Philippines history.

American Sarah Robles also became the first U.S. woman to win two Olympic weightlifting medals when she won bronze in the 87+kg category, to go with her bronze medal from Rio 2016 in the 75kg category.
