EOC VP donated Olympic gold medal to help Ukrainian cause

She won her gold in trap shooting in Sydney 2000 and has donated the medal to “Strong Together”

European Olympic Committee (EOC) Vice President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė had donated her gold medal from the Sydney 2000 Games to “Strong Together,” a non-governmental organization to help Ukrainians.

Gudzinevičiūtė, who is also president of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania said in a statement, “My Olympic medal is a symbolic expression of gratitude for people’s kindness in facing this terrible war.”

“Sport and Olympism symbolize peace and world unity. We wholeheartedly support the people of Ukraine, its athletes and the entire Olympic community. We are contributing to a joint effort in whatever way we can.”

Strong Together is an organization set up to help people who’ve been adversely affected by the war in Ukraine, including representatives of the sporting and Olympic community.

Gudzinevičiūtė was the first female Olympic gold medalist in the history of independent Lithuania. She presented her medal from Sydney as a token of appreciation to Strong Together. They have made the largest financial contribution to support the citizens of Ukraine.
