The World Athletics Championships have never been held in Southeast Asia, but Singapore is hoping that will change in 2025.

The city-state has announced Singapore25, their bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2025. Singapore has hosted Formula One’s Singapore Grand Prix since 2008 and it has quickly become one of the most anticipated stops on the F1 calendar.

Lim Teck Yin, Chief Executive Office of Sport Singapore said, “the World Athletics Championships have never been to Southeast Asia. The region is home to 680 million people, including 200 million under the age of 35. Our potential for new fans, partnerships, athletes and heroes to take athletics to the next level is self-evident, and Singapore25 can be that springboard.”

In addition to the annual F1 race, Singapore hosted the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 and the Southeast Asian Games in 2015. The chance to host one of the sporting calendar’s most prestigious events is an opportunity of a lifetime for the city-state.

“Singapore25 will give our athletes and those from the region the opportunity to rub shoulders with the giants of track and field and fire up more interest for the sport,” said Lien Choong Luen, president of Singapore Athletics.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to inspire the athletes of tomorrow.”

This year’s World Athletics Championships, delayed a year by the pandemic and the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, will be held in Oregon, USA this July, with the 2023 edition taking place in Budapest, Hungary. The winning bid to host the biennial event in 2025 is expected to be announced this summer.
