The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) released a statement saying they are banning all Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in any international or continental weightlifting events.

“The IWF Executive Board has taken the decision to suspend the participation of all athletes, team officials and technical officials from Russia and Belarus from any international or continental weightlifting event until further notice,” the statement read in part.

“Also until further notice, no IWF sanctioned events will be organized in these countries.”

The organization also stressed their continued desire to “develop and promote weightlifting in the spirit of the Olympic Charter.” A move which should certainly be seen in a positive light by the International Olympic Committee as they debate the sport’s place in future Olympic Games.

The IWF Executive Board has also approved funding to support Ukrainian athletes during their war with Russia, and are doing their part to ensure financial and training support to Ukrainian weightlifters for the upcoming Youth, Junior and World Championships.
