The Japan Skating Federation has confirmed Hanyu Yuzuru won’t compete in the upcoming ISU World Figure Skating Championship in France.
Yuzuru is still dealing with the effects of an ankle injury he sustained in Beijing during the Olympics, where he finished fourth. He was the gold medal winner at both Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018.
“I’ve been told to rest the ankle. First I will rest and then take it from there,” Yuzuru said.
He sustained an ankle injury during practice in Beijing while trying an historic quadruple Axel, and his ankle had been a source of concern even leading up the Olympics.
“The sprain was worse than I initially thought. Any other competition and I would have definitely pulled out,” he said in Beijing. “It hurt so badly during morning practice the day of competition that I even thought about pulling out.”
The World Figure Skating Championships take place March 21-27 in Montpellier, France. The next Grand Prix season won’t begin until October.
