University campuses continue to serve as important venues for multidisciplinary games.

Next summer, for example, the University of Alabama in Birmingham (USA) will be the Sports Village of the World University Games, and in May 2023 the facilities of the University of El Salvador will host the athletes of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The selection of the Salvadoran University as Athletic Village is one of the most recent events in the preparations for the regional Games, which should have the presence of 37 countries.

According to the National Sports Institute of El Salvador (INDES) “some areas of the University must be adapted to receive athletes in the best way.”

The university center has already served as the venue for the Central American and Caribbean Games organized by El Salvador in 2002. The 2023 edition will be the third time this country has sponsored these Games. The first was way back in 1935.

Within the facilities renovation scheme approved by the government, the remodeling announced for the Jorge “Mágico” González stadium, scene of the opening and closing ceremonies of the mega-event and currently in the demolition stage, is striking.

The name of the stadium pays tribute to arguably the best soccer player in the country’s history. González, 63, is currently a coach.

The authorities hope to organize “the best Games” in the history of this event whose first edition was held in 1926. In this sense, they are considered the oldest regional games in the world.

The government, in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee and the regional organization Centro Caribe Sports, hopes that the strategies designed for the Games in the economic, social, environmental and sports aspects will leave an important legacy for El Salvador.

In 2026 Santo Domingo will organize the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, which are already known as the “Centennial Games”.

San Salvador was the last lifeline of the mega-event after Mayagüez, Puerto Rico declined.

Both cities had stepped forward on an emerging basis after the original venue, Panama City, abruptly resigned in the summer of 2020, due to problems with the coronavirus pandemic.

Salvadorans took on the challenge with just two years to organize the complex contest.
