Jan Dijkema, the President of the International Skating Union (ISU) since 2016, will retire at the end of his term this year.
“I’ll be 78 this year,” he told German news agency Sport-Informations-Dienst. “There’s been a request from members to stay, but I think it’s been nice. I’ve been an ice sports official for 30 years.”
He was elected president of the ISU in 2016, and won another four-year term by acclimation in 2018. The next ISU Congress is scheduled to take place in Phuket, Thailand in June.
He took over the presidency from Italian Ottavio Cinquanta who held the role for 20 years. Dijkema had previously been the ISU vice-president for speed skating. The ISU has only 11 presidents in their 130-year history.
The Dutchman is also a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency Foundation Board.
