As Beijing prepares to host the Winter Games in just over a month, the CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) has expressed concern over Canadian athletes’ safety.
“We’re worried,” David Shoemaker told Canadian TV during a New Year’s Eve interview. “We’re taking it day by day, and wake up every morning to make sure that is how we still feel about it. We are confident the Games can still be scheduled safely,” Shoemaker said.
Several winter sports have seen disruptions in their Olympic run-up schedule due to COVID-19 concerns, including ice hockey, alpine skiing, bobsleigh and curling.
Shoemaker said if the COC feels athlete safety is at risk, his country won’t hesitate to keep their athletes home for the Beijing Games.
“We have yet to have a conversation with the International Olympic Committee about postponement, but we are having frequent conversations with other participating nations,” Shoemaker said.
He believes the greatest challenge will be getting his athletes into the Beijing Olympic bubble without testing positive for COVID-19, and facing a potential five week quarantine period in China, although he acknowledged the Olympic bubble may actually be the safest place from getting COVID-19.
