The organizing committee for the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games revealed their mascot, named Adirondack Mac, via a Twitter post on November 12. The announcement came a day before the official debut of Adirondack Mac at the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Open House and Job Fair.

Adirondack Mac is a six-foot tall, scarf adorning moose, who gets the first part of his name from the mountain range that surrounds Lake Placid. He was designed by Kristina Ingerowski, a sophomore at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Ingerowski, a native of Farmington, New York, commented on her design being chosen, stating, “it is an honor to have my mascot design chosen for the FISU Winter World University Games 2023 in Lake Placid.”

“Adirondack Mac is special to me because I have spent a lot of time over the years with my grandparents and family who live in Lake Placid. I wanted to capture the majestic beauty and character of the Adirondack region. There’s nothing more charming than an Adirondack moose to represent and celebrate this spirit of friendly athletic competition in Lake Placid.”

Ingerowski’s design was only one out of 135 initial submissions made in the hunt for a mascot. Ten designs were ultimately shortlisted to the selection committee, with Ingerowski’s receiving the top honors. On top of having her design be the face of the Games, Ingerowski was awarded a cash prize of $5,000.

Adirondack Mac is expected to be an ambassador for Games, touring New York in an attempt to drum up interest for the Games. Lake Placid Mayor Art Devlin commented on the announcement, saying, “we look forward to hosting the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games with our neighboring communities, and showcasing the Adirondacks on a global stage.”

“We proudly welcome Adirondack Mac as the mascot that will best represent the North Country for these Games.”

Adirondack North Country Sports Council Executive Director Ashley Walden added, “the mascot is a symbol of the Games. Adirondack Mac brings the Games to life by embodying the joy, spirit, determination and athleticism of the Games, the North Country and the region.”

Some 2,500 student athletes are expected to descend on Lake Placid to compete in twelve sports over eleven days. Lake Placid will host the 2023 FISU World University Games from January 12-22, 2023.
