Five Swedish Olympic medalist will be ambassadors for the project World Class Vegetarian. The Swedish Olympic Committee will work together with WWF to prove that it’s possible to eat more sustainable food and still be a world class athlete.
"There is no meaning being world class if there’s no world to live on", says Hanna Öberg, Olympic gold medalist in biathlon and one of the five ambassadors.
The five ambassadors are Charlotte Kalla, cross-country, Hanna Öberg, biathlon, André Myhrer, alpine skiing, Max Salminen, sailing and Peder Fredricson, equestrian.
During the four-year project the Swedish Olympic Committee will have chefs preparing more sustainable food for the athletes for a total of 300 days, during training camps and competitions.
"We will develop vegetarian food to fit the special needs a world class athlete has when it comes to nutrition. We are fully convinced we can overcome those challenges. If our athletes can shift to a more sustainable way, anyone can do it" says Linda Bakkman, nutritionist at Swedish Olympic Committee.
The Swedish athletes will not become vegans, but the goal is to shift to more sustainable food.
In Sweden people live four times what earth’s natural resources can supply. Food stands for one third of the impact on the climate, according to WWF (World Wildlife Fund).
"If these ambassadors can spread the word regarding these matters we can reach people we haven’t be able to reach before" says Håkan Wirtén, Secretary General of WWF in Sweden.
