The World Series of Boxing Season VIII kicks off this Friday, February 2 with a strong first week of boxing action that includes three matches: two from the Group Europe and one from the Group Americas.

Season VIII will follow the successful three-group format with 12 teams competing in the regional regular season and global play-offs to win the unique and prestigious WSB trophy.

Italy's The Thunder meet WSB debutants Croatian Knights in Florence’s Pala Mandela stadium on Friday evening in a key Group Europe contest and the very first match of the new Season VIII. The Thunder have been building a formidable reputation at home since their return to the WSB last Season and will be looking to get their new campaign off to a winning start against the Croatian Knights who boast a strong squad determined to establish themselves in the competition from the outset.

Also in Europe, the legendary Salle Wagram, located in Paris, welcomes Season VIII in style with one the most vibrant rivalries in the European boxing scene. Season I Champions, France Fighting Roosters meet the British Lionhearts in an early clash between two teams meant to top the Group Europe. Lead by Peter McGrail, the Season VI runners-up British Lionhearts will go to Paris for what promises to be a gripping, close-fought battle. The capital of France will see the two sides begin their latest quests for glory, with the French team looking to invoke some of the spirit of Season I, when they romped to the first-ever WSB team title

In Group Americas, two-time WSB Champions Cuba Domadores are set to host Colombia Heroicos in their first taste of Season VIII action on Friday night in Havana. Colombia has a squad stacked full of Olympic and World Champions. Defeating the Domadores represents a formidable task, but not an impossible one, as the Heroicos already proved with two 3-2 wins in Colombia last year. The Heroicos begin their second campaign in the competition aiming to reach their first WSB Finals after a successful debut.

World Series of Boxing (WSB) is a unique team boxing competition and one of the most exciting sports leagues in the world. Beginning in February 2018, Season VIII sees 12 teams compete in three regional groups; America, Europe and Asia, with home and away matches, consisting of five bouts each, between the group rivals.

The top two teams from each group and the two strongest third-placed teams will qualify for the play-offs, which assume the format of four Quarter-Finals, two Semi-Finals and the grand Final.

The world’s premier boxing series is a hard-fought competition of unparalleled intensity, speed and power, where boxers compete across five rounds, scored using the 10 Points Must system.

Season VIII is set to build on the enormous success of Season VII, and features the stars of the 2017 AIBA World Championships and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. WSB boxers accounted for 23 Olympic medals at the Games, including 6 golds, adding an extra dimension of excitement and competition for both the fans and the boxers.

Boxing fans around the World will be able to follow the action on WSB Facebook LIVE.
