Lausanne, Switzerland - May 28, 2014 – The World Union of Olympic Cities is pleased to announce a new initiative - the "Smart Cities & Sport Summit" with the first edition of the summit to be organised on 5-7 November this year in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The conference is organised for representatives of cities, regions and countries around the world interested in learning more about effective and smart strategies that connect sport and cities. Whether the vision is to host a future Olympic Games, to host other sporting events or to create new ways to develop a city with an active and healthy life-style, the conference will provide the highest and most prestigious platform ever for the exchange of ideas and experience among cities of all sizes.

Mr Daniel Brélaz, President of the World Union of Olympic Cities and Mayor of Lausanne city, commented: "We are very excited by the opportunities that this summit will provide for our colleagues from cities from all around the world. This is a unique occasion to expand our knowledge about how sport and cites can interact in a smarter and more sustainable way. I am convinced that we will emerge with new, fresh and smart ideas on how to combine sport events and sustainable urban development."

World Union of Olympic Cities is an association of former and future Olympic hosting cities, supported by the International Olympic Committee. The association was created in 2002 with the goal of facilitating an effective dialogue between former and future Olympic host cities in order to ensure a continued positive impact of the Olympic Games. With this new initiative the World Union of Olympic Cities now reaches out to peers from around world to share experience and best practice and to learn from world class experts from the wider sports industry.

More information about the programme, speakers and additional activities will be launched over the coming months.
