At exactly 4.48 pm on Tuesday 15 September, Champion for Peace Guo Chuan and his international crew including two Frenchmen, a German and a Russian, reached the Bering Strait, the finish line for their challenge in the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic Ocean World Record Challenge, which began on 3 September in the Russian city of Murmansk, marks another success for Guo, the first Chinese sailor to have single-handedly sailed around the world non-stop.
Before setting sail on the icy waters of Arctic, the crew had planned to reach the Bering Strait in less than 15 days, but in the end 13 days were all they needed to set a new World Record.
"I’m on the top of the world! It’s such an unbelievable moment, one I could not have even imagined two months ago. It’s a dream come true" said Guo Chuan, just after crossing the finish line.
But this exploit on the maxi-trimaran Qingdao was not just a sporting achievement, especially with four nationalities on-board and Peace and Sport’s logo on the mainsail.
"I’d like to promote the ‘Peace and Sport’ spirit to more people. Our team has two French crew, two German crew and one Russian crew and I am sure that peace and friendship will be the guiding values on our trimaran" said Guo Chuan before his departure.
Commenting on the sailor’s fantastic performance, Joël Bouzou added that "having the support of such a great athlete is an honour and a privilege for all of us at Peace and Sport. Once again this incredible feat showcases the important role of sporting champions off the field of play".
This sporting challenge will also enable Peace and Sport to raise funds for its field projects through the recycling and re-use of the mainsail of the Qingdao, the proceeds of which will fund a field program determined with Guo Chuan.
