(ATR) Host City operations for The World Games 2021 have begun in earnest in Birmingham, Alabama with the unveiling of the official website at www.TheWorldGames2021.com.
The website currently contains basic background information and links, with new information and news to be added in the days leading up to the event.
The 11th edition of the World Games is being led by CEO DJ Mackovets, Sports Director Steve Mistrot and Operations Director Jay B. Hall. The trio have a combined 17 years of management-level experience with multi-sport events, including three Olympic Games, two U.S. Olympic Festivals and a World University Games.
The World Games is a quadrennial event that features sports with aspirations to join the Olympic program. The International World Games Association signed a memorandum of understanding with the IOC last year consolidating this position under Olympic Agenda 2020.
Various disciplines such as badminton, beach volleyball, trampoline, rugby sevens, taekwondo, triathlon, weightlifting, karate, skateboarding, rock climbing, surfing and softball – the latter five having already been added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – have appeared in the World Games.
IWGA President Jose Perurena will be in Birmingham from Dec. 14-17 and will meet the city's new mayor Randall Woodfin during the visit.
Woodfin, who was elected earlier this month, says that the Games "will have the full support" of his administration.
Birmingham will be the first U.S. host of the World Games since the inaugural edition in 1981. The latest edition of the Games was held in Wroclaw, Poland in July.
