Perth, Scotland – The World Curling Federation’s (WCF) Olympic Celebration Tour has received a substantial funding boost from a US charitable foundation. The Foundation for Global Sports Development has donated $50,000 US dollars to help support the programme.
Designed to capitalise on the increased interest in the sport of curling both prior to, during and after the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the WCF’s Olympic Celebration Tour is a series of instructional sessions with curling Olympians intended to attract interest and promote curling within WCF Member Associations.
The Tours will be conducted throughout the next two seasons (2013/14 and 2014/15) in locations around the world. It will see one Olympic athlete and at least one qualified WCF Instructor visit a Member Association to give curlers the opportunity to develop their skills whilst also getting up close and personal with some of the top athletes in the sport.
The $50,000 US dollars provides a significant amount of the total support required to operate this programme in its first year of activity.
"We cannot thank the Foundation for Global Sports Development enough – their support will ensure that this programme benefits hundreds of people around the world who are either already involved in curling or looking to get involved in our sport," said WCF President Kate Caithness.
She added: "The Olympic Celebration Tour is an integral part of the WCF’s development plans over the coming months as the world’s focus turns to the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and we hope that this programme gives people the opportunity to try our sport, and for those already curling, the inspiration to develop further."
