(ATR) Football tournaments, winter sports, and Paralympians were among the popular internet queries of 2014.
A study from Google shows that this summer’s FIFA World Cup was the search engine’s second most-searched term worldwide in 2014. The event ran from June 12 – July 13, but the months leading up to the event were marred by delays in construction and mass protests in Brazil.
According to a Google widget, the most popular game of the World Cup wasn’t the final between Germany and Argentina, but Brazil’s embarrassing 7-1 loss to Germany in the semifinals on July 8.
The World Cup also inspired the year’s most popular Google homepage doodle, featuring a group of workers attempting to watch the tournament while their boss is away. Second place went to Google’s Sochi 2014 doodle, a multicolored banner featuring a variety of winter sports that was posted ahead of the Olympic Games.
Both the World Cup and Sochi 2014 were also featured in Wikipedia’s #Edit2014 video, which highlights some of the events in 2014 that led to widespread edits on the website.
According to The Malaysian Times, "The FIFA 2014 World Cup was a big talking point, while England's poor performance in the tournament led to the editing of the page ‘England national football team’."
Meanwhile, the murder trial of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius captivated the world and wound up Google’s eighth most-popular global news item of the year.
The sprinter fatally shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in early 2013.
His trial lasted from March 3 to September 12 when he was found guilty of culpable homicide and reckless endangerment of a firearm at a restaurant.
Pistorius was given a five-year prison sentence and a three-year suspended sentence on October 21.
