Doha, Qatar, September 30, 2011 – The Doha 2017 Bid Committee is pleased to announce that Andreas Thorkildsen, Norwegian javelin thrower, will be visiting Doha next week to show his support for Doha’s bid for the 2017 IAAF World Championships.
From Norway, Andreas Thorkildsen rose to stardom through his European, World and Olympic performances. Having competed in Doha at the Samsung Diamond League earlier this year, Andreas is keen to show his support for the Doha 2017 bid for the IAAF World Championships. His visit to Doha coincides with the IAAF Evaluation Commission visit on October 5th and 6th.
Andreas Thorkildsen stated: "I had a great experience competing in Doha and I can see that their experience in and commitment to Athletics will continue to grow. If Athletics wants to set new standards for a World Championships that will take my sport to the next level then Doha is without doubt the right place."
Mr. Abdulla Al-Zaini, President of the QAAF and Executive Director of Doha 2017 Bid Committee, commented: "We are honoured to have Andreas’ support for our bid and glad to have him here for the evaluation visit. We want to have a World Championships in 2017 that exceeds expectations for everyone, including the Athletes."
During the evaluation visit, from October 5 and 6, the IAAF Evaluation Commission will also see the launch of the renowned Schools Olympic Program. Kids’ Athletics is at the heart of this successful youth program. Last year, with the support of the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation, 17,492 students took part over the five months of the program. Qatar’s Schools Olympic Program has received both regional and international recognition for its rapid achievements in expanding Athletics participation.
