USA Leads Women’s Ice Hockey Worlds

Reigning champs USA sit atop the standings after a weekend of play at the women’s ice hockey world championships in Burlington, Vermont.

The hosts kicked off their campaign for a fourth straight title Saturday with a 9-2 rout over reigning three-time runner-up Canada, who is now tied three points apiece with 2011 bronze medalist Finland. Russia rounds out Group A with no points after falling to both Finland and USA, who has the maximum of six points after two games.

Sweden edges out Germany five points to four atop Group B after winning their Sunday matchup 2-1 in overtime.Switzerland is in third with three points after beating last-place Slovakia, who has no points.

After a final batch of round-robin games Tuesday afternoon and evening, the top two Group A teams automatically advance to Friday’s semifinals while the third-place team from Group A plays Group B’s runner-up and the fourth-place finisher from Group A faces the Group B winner in a pair of Wednesday quarterfinals.

Both medal games are scheduled for Saturday.

Sweden, Canada Top Curling Rankings

Canada’s men carry the top spot into curling’s offseason after a world championship win over the weekend in Basel, Switzerland.

Silver medalist Scotland moves up to second in the final 2011-2012 rankings released Tuesday by the World Curling Federation, and Norway drops down to third after losing the bronze medal game to Sweden, the new No. 4.

On the women’s side, Switzerland sits third following last month’s world championship win with Canada in second and reigning Olympic champs Sweden still atop the rankings.

Asian Boxing Qualifying

Boxing’s continental Olympic qualifying for Asia comes to a close this week in Astana.

A dozen of the 25 total London 2012 quota places up for grabs in the Kazakh capital are already decided with the remaining 13 to be claimed during Wednesday’s semifinals and Thursday’s finals.

The daily schedule is available here, and bouts will be streamed live on the official TV channel of the International Boxing Association.

European Lifting Qualifying

Quota places for London 2012 are on offer at the European Weightlifting Championships underway in Turkey.

Only countries that did not book their berths at the main qualification events, the 2010 and 2011 world championships, can win spots this week in Antalya.

Competition runs through Sunday at Kepez Basket Hall.
