With the presence of the director of Medellin Institute of Sports , David Mora, the Secretary of Environment, Ana Milena Joya, representing the Mayor, and Clemencia Anaya, Olympism advisor, was held Tuesday morning the plantation of a tree that will grow as representation of the dream that the city has of becoming the host for the Youth Olympic Games on 2018. The event was held as part of the celebration of World Environment Day and Sports.
During the ceremony, held at the Plaza Suramericana of Atanasio Girardot sports, was planted a Cambulo, native tree that can grow to 35 meters high and 1 in diameter and will grow in this space as a symbol of the Olympic dream that the city has.
In addition to the city sports personalities, also attended children from the local playgrounds and outstanding junior athletes. The activity highlighted the responsibility that the city has with the environmental care and awareness emphasized that in Medellin, "a tree is an inhabitant of the city".
Leaders and athletes joined the celebration of World Environment Day by planting trees in the Colombian Olympic Committee headquarters in Bogota, where the national sport showed its committment with the environmental causes.
"We want to take advantage of the delivery of the flag to the National delegation of the Olympic Games, to also commemorate the World Environment Day. This is a simple way to understand the conservation needs of the environment" said the Minister of Sports, Andres Botero Phillipsbourne, IOC member and Executive Committee of the Colombian Olympic Committee.
The Athletes Omar Pinzon, Andrey Quintero, Paula Medina and coach John Cruz, and the leaders Alberto Ferrer, general secretary of the COC, Fidel Mendoza, IOC member and COC Executive Committee, were responsible for planting the Guayacan trees. "One of the great purposes of sport is to help preserve the environment.
