Innsbruck, Austria – 14.01.2020 – Parallel to the Winter World Masters Games 2020, the third edition of the Tyrolean School Winter Games (TSWG) will be taking place today and tomorrow. A total of 86 teams from schools throughout Tyrol will compete against each other at the WWMG 2020 venues.

Following their successful debut in 2016 and a second edition in 2018, the Tyrolean School Winter Games are back for a third time in 2020. They are being organised once again by innsbruck-tirol sports, the people behind the WWMG 2020, in close cooperation with the Tyrolean Board of Education. Around 1000 school pupils are expected to take part in the TSWS 2020. The focus will once again be on having fun and exercising together. Six different sports are on the schedule. "It is a great opportunity for schools and sport in Tyrol to cooperate with innsbruck-tirol sports. The children will learn to appreciate the importance of sport, meet amateur sportsmen and sportswomen from around the world, and have an opportunity to practise working as a team," says Andreas Schnitzer, who is responsible for promoting cross-country skiing in schools throughout Tyrol. All the events of the TSWG 2020 are team events, meaning pupils of different ages and sexes must work together in order to achieve success.

TSWS 2020 once part of an international sporting event

The 3,185 masters athletes from around the world taking part in the WWMG 2020 will give the TSWS 2020 a special flair. "This event is always something really special for youngsters in Tyrol. Linking up with an international highlight such as the WWMG 2020 makes the Tyrolean School Winter Games even more of a highlight. The interest from schools throughout the region has been huge. I am sure the pupils will use the opportunity to watch the masters races too," says Arnold Steiner, responsible for supporting and promoting alpine skiing in local schools. Georg Spazier, head of the WWMG 2020 organising committee, agrees:" The fact that the TSWS 2020 are taking place at the same time as the WWMG 2020 opens up opportunities for synergies and bringing different generations together." The TSWS are open to school pupils from throughout Tyrol up to the age of 19. The longest journey has been undertaken by a school class from the village of St. Jakob in East Tirol – a good three-hour drive from the regional capital Innsbruck.
