The World Flying Disc Federation ("WFDF") is pleased to announce that the Global Association of International Sport Federations ("GAISF") confirmed that the Flying Disc sport of Freestyle will be on the sports programme of the first edition of the World Urban Games, to be held in Budapest (Hungary) on 13-15 September 2019.
GAISF Director Philippe Gueisbuhler confirmed Freestyle’s place on the competition programme in a letter sent to WFDF Executive Director Volker Bernardi. "We thank you very much for your collaboration and look forward to working together to ensure the first edition of the World Urban Games in Budapest in 2019 is a success," wrote Gueisbuhler.
This comes two weeks after it was announced that Budapest had replaced Los Angeles as the host city for the 2019 event. The GAISF Multisport Games Department had originally accepted Freestyle as one of eight competition sports eligible for the schedule in Los Angeles. Now with the Games being relocated to Budapest, Freestyle was kept as one of six competition sports on the programme (https://gaisf.sport/gaisf-announces-sports-for-inaugural-world-urban-games-budapest-2019/) .
"We are extremely pleased to announce that the Flying Disc sport of Freestyle will be on GAISF’s World Urban Games programme as a competition sport. That underlines again the attractiveness of our discipline for such prestigious Multisport Games," commented WFDF President Robert "Nob" Rauch. "Freestyle is a youthful and modern sport which fits quite well in beautiful Budapest’s urban setting along the Danube. We are excited to showcase the skill and artistry of our athletes and are confident it will be an attractive event for both local spectators and social media audiences."
"Having Freestyle confirmed as a competition sport for the programme of the first edition of the World Urban Games is an incredible opportunity for us to demonstrate our attractive Flying Disc sport within a Multisport Games event, a major milestone in the development of Freestyle internationally," stated WFDF Freestyle Committee chair Kevin "Skippy" Givens. "The endorsement by GAISF and the organisers in Budapest will open new opportunities for our community and we won’t let them down."
