WADA AND FONDS DE RECHERCHE DU QUEBEC TO FUND THREE PROJECTS RESEARCHING THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR ANTI-DOPING

Montreal, 21 October 2019 – The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), in conjunction with the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), is pleased to announce funding for three projects that will explore the possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance the global anti-doping program.

Following a call for applications for targeted research on the application and impact of AI in the area of anti-doping, eight proposals were received and, after a period of careful assessment by WADA and FRQ, the successful projects were selected for funding.

WADA Senior Director, Sciences and International Partnerships, Dr Olivier Rabin, said: "AI is an exciting area to be explored and WADA believes there is enormous untapped potential for its use within anti-doping, particularly when it comes to the analysis of big data. In time, we think it could have a hugely positive impact. These three complementary projects will help shed some light on the extent of AI’s potential in the anti-doping context and we are pleased to be able to support what we hope will be important pieces of research."

Chief Scientist of Québec, Dr. Rémi Quirion, said: "Montreal has become a world leader in the area of artificial intelligence and it is thrilled that WADA has decided to engage closely with the Québec research community in this field. It is hoped through these three projects that we will raise the understanding of the impacts that AI could have on the fight against doping, both technologically and socially. Multi-disciplinary collaborations such as these are ensuring that Québec researchers are at the center of international efforts in this field as they use their expertise to solve complex global problems."

The first project, led by ‘Dataperformers’, a company that was founded in Montreal in 2013, will be carried out in collaboration with the WADA-accredited laboratory in Paris, known as the Département des analyses de l’Agence française de lutte contre le dopage. The one-year project will explore possible techniques for the analysis and application of AI to detect the use of prohibited substances or methods to circumvent anti-doping rules. If the results are promising, they will be compared with those obtained using traditional statistical methods, such as the adaptive model currently used for the Athlete Biological Passport.

The second project, led by the Montreal-based company ‘Element AI’, aims to quantify the risk of doping in athletes through the application of AI and, as a result, to develop a sampling and testing strategy based on proprietary algorithms. The project will be funded for a period of two years.

The third project involves members of the ‘Centre for Genomics and Politics’ at McGill University in Montreal, supervised by Prof. Yann Joly. This study will use a qualitative approach to identify the perceptions of different stakeholders regarding the use of AI and its benefits in the context of anti-doping and to guide dialogue between WADA, other anti-doping organizations, athletes and the general public. The project will also be funded for a two-year period.

In May 2018, WADA and the FRQ signed a memorandum of understanding, which will yield CAD 2 million for anti-doping research. Specifically, the two organizations committed to contribute CAD 200,000 every year for five years (2018-22) in order to fund research projects relating to anti-doping, with the possibility of renewing the agreement beyond its initial five-year mandate.

L’AMA ET LES FONDS DE RECHERCHE DU QUÉBEC FINANCENT TROIS PROJETS DE RECHERCHE SUR L’UTILISATION DE L’INTELLIGENCE ARTIFICIELLE DANS LA LUTTE CONTRE LE DOPAGE

Montréal, le 21 octobre 2019 – L’Agence mondiale antidopage (AMA), en collaboration avec les Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), est heureuse d’annoncer le financement de trois projets visant à étudier les applications possibles de l’intelligence artificielle (IA) pour renforcer le programme mondial antidopage.

À la suite d’un appel de candidatures pour des recherches ciblées sur l’application et l’impact de l’IA dans le domaine de la lutte contre le dopage, l’AMA et les FRQ ont reçu huit dossiers. Après les avoir minutieusement évalués, ils en ont sélectionné trois pour financement.

« L’IA est un domaine passionnant à explorer, a déclaré le Dr Olivier Rabin, directeur exécutif senior, Sciences et partenariats internationaux de l’AMA. L’AMA estime que son utilisation dans le cadre de la lutte contre le dopage présente un énorme potentiel inexploité, particulièrement en ce qui concerne l’analyse des données massives. Avec le temps, nous pensons que cela pourrait avoir une incidence extrêmement positive. Ces trois projets complémentaires permettront d’en savoir plus sur l’ampleur du potentiel de l’IA dans le contexte de la lutte contre le dopage, et nous sommes heureux de pouvoir soutenir ces études qui, nous l’espérons, constitueront des recherches importantes. »

Grâce aux collaborations multidisciplinaires comme celles-ci, les chercheurs du Québec, utilisant leur expertise pour résoudre des problèmes complexes à l’échelle mondiale, sont au centre des efforts internationaux dans ce secteur. »

Le premier projet, dirigé par « Dataperformers », une entreprise fondée à Montréal en 2013, sera réalisé en collaboration avec le Département des analyses de l’Agence française de lutte contre le dopage, qui est le laboratoire accrédité par l’AMA à Paris. D’une durée d’un an, il portera sur les techniques d’analyse et d’application possibles de l’IA dans la détection des substances ou méthodes interdites utilisées pour contourner les règles antidopage. Si les résultats sont prometteurs, ils seront comparés à ceux obtenus au moyen de méthodes statistiques classiques, comme le modèle adaptatif actuellement utilisé pour le Passeport biologique de l’athlète.

Le deuxième projet, dirigé par l’entreprise montréalaise « Element AI », vise à quantifier le risque de dopage chez les sportifs par l’application de l’IA et, ainsi, à établir une stratégie d’échantillonnages et de contrôles fondée sur des algorithmes exclusifs. Le projet sera financé pour une période de deux ans.

Le troisième projet sera mené par des membres du « Centre de génomique et politiques » de l’Université McGill à Montréal et supervisé par le Professeur Yann Joly. L’étude utilisera une approche qualitative pour déterminer les perceptions des différents partenaires quant à l’utilisation de l’IA et à ses avantages dans le contexte de la lutte contre le dopage, ainsi que pour orienter le dialogue entre l’AMA, les autres organisations antidopage, les sportifs et le grand public. Le projet sera également financé pour une période de deux ans.

En mai 2018, l’AMA et les FRQ ont signé un protocole d’entente en vertu duquel ils octroieront 2 millions de dollars CA à des projets de recherche sur la lutte contre le dopage. Les deux organisations se sont engagées à verser 200 000 $ CA par année pendant cinq ans (de 2018 à 2022) afin de financer des projets de recherche sur la lutte contre le dopage, avec la possibilité de renouveler l’entente au-delà de sa durée initiale de cinq ans.
