The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced its shortlist for January's Athlete of the Month award, and the public can now vote for the winner via the poll on the www.Paralympic.org homepage.
This month's nominees include:
Alena Kaufman (Russia): She won both the biathlon and cross-country skiing overall World Cup trophies in the women's standing class, making a name for herself as Sochi 2014 quickly approaches.
Shingo Kunieda (Japan): The wheelchair tennis player picked up his seventh Australian Open singles title, defeating Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez in the final in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-1. He also paired up with France's Stephane Houdet to win their fifth Grand Slam doubles title together.
Roman Petushkov (Russia): He won both the biathlon and cross-country skiing overall World Cup trophies for the season in the men's sitting class, dominating his races in both sports.
Markus Salcher (Austria): The standing skier recorded three first-place finishes at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Panorama, Canada, and then just last week four more top finishes at the World Cup event in Tignes, France.
Anna Schaffelhuber (Germany): The sit skier has proved to be nearly unbeatable in January at the three stops on the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup. She finished first four times at the World Cup in Panorama, Canada, three times in Copper Mountain, Colorado in the USA, and then four more times in Tignes, France.
Mike Shea (USA): The snowboarder is now No. 1 in the World Cup standings this season after two first-place finishes at the IPCAS Snowboard World Cup in Big White, Canada, and a top finish at the World Cup event in Copper Mountain, Colorado in the USA.
The public now has until 12:00 (CEST) on 10 February to vote for which athlete it thought had the best performance last month.
The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs).
