Volleyball House has officially opened its doors, with visitors and invited guests given a taste of the excitement and anticipation that volleyball and beach volleyball promise to deliver during the Olympic Games.
"After years of planning, I’m delighted to officially open our very first House at an Olympic Games," said FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F°. "The iconic Copacabana beach provides an idyllic setting for us to welcome and entertain our guests and I am excited for them to experience the spectacle of this summer’s must see sport at the FIVB Volleyball House."
The FIVB’s first dedicated House at an Olympic Games is a short walk from the Olympic Beach Volleyball venue, which is set to draw in some big spectator numbers during the Olympics.
The Volleyball House infrastructure will be an important part of the sport’s legacy following the 2016 Olympic Games. Using a local school as its headquarters, the Volleyball House renovations and upgrades will serve its students well when the new school term begins at the end of August.
Along with FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F°, and Hannes Jaggerhoffer of the Beach Major Series, the school’s director, Anna Maria dos Prazeres was also present at the opening ceremony. "Today is a historic day not just for Brazil but also for our school," she said. "I would like to thank the FIVB and all our teachers for their terrific work."
Helena Bomery, Education Municipal Secretary, also took the floor saying, "I believe that the Volleyball House and the Olympics will open doors for many new athletes to emerge."
Students Rayr Dias and Ana Alice Macedo were proud representatives of the school. "The school is where students think and dream," said Rayr. "I love how it looks now," said his school mate Ana. "I’m used to playing Quiemado, but I’m going to change to volleyball."
The ceremony was given the star treatment with home grown volleyball super star Giba, USA’s three time Olympic gold medal winner Kerri Walsh Jennings, Russian Olympic silver medallist Elizaveta Bracht Tichchenko and Volleyroo Thomas Edgar of Australia present.
In the meantime visitors can look forward to taking in the sporting action from the volleyball and beach volleyball venues at the house. The International Federation has partnered with creative design and audio visual system integration company Sarner to bring the latest Virtual Reality technology to the Volleyball House, creating an immersive experience for all guests and showcasing the sport in an innovative and interactive way.
