(ATR) An Iranian-British woman jailed in Tehran for protesting at a volleyball match is now free.
Ghoncheh Ghavami was pardoned on Thursday after being sentenced in Nov. 2014 to a year in jail for spreading anti-state propaganda, the British Foreign Office confirmed.
Ghavami was initially arrested June 2014 at the Azadi Stadium in Tehran after she and others insisted that women be allowed to watch an ongoing volleyball match between Iran and Italy. She was freed on $38,000 bail three weeks later, awaiting a decision by the Court of Appeal.
"We welcome the news that Ghoncheh Ghavami has been pardoned by the Court of Appeal in Iran, although we are concerned that she is still subject to a travel ban," a British Foreign Office spokeswoman said Thursday.
"We are following the case closely and remain in touch with her family."
Iran announced in January that it will allow foreign women to watch men play volleyball during the 2015 Asian Men's Volleyball Championships later this year.
Iranian women will still be banned from watching under the country’s Islamic law.
