(ATR) Today begins the final week of the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG5) taking place in Da Nang, Vietnam.
Athletes from 43 countries are competing to win gold, silver and bronze this year but some athletes are already making headway with one or two gold medals.
The first gold medal of ABG5 was won by Benjapor Sriphanomthorn in the women's five-kilometer marathon swim.
Vitaliy Khudyakovfrom Kazakhstan won the gold medal in the men’s 10-kilometer marathon swimming event.
Saleh Mohammed of Syria, who won bronze behind Khudyakov in the 10-kilometer race, followed that up with silver in the five-kilometer event on Sunday.
The 30-year-old swimmer has won three gold medals, two silver and three bronze in four appearances at ABG5.
"I really enjoy taking part in the Asian Beach Games," stated Saleh, who represented Syria in the 10-kilometer marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Despite all Saleh has accomplished Syria has yet to place at the top of the medal standings this year, so far.
Vietnam is currently leading the medal table with Thailand and China close behind.
The host country brought the largest delegation to the event with 310 athletes, followed by Thailand with 292.
Phan Thi Phuong won the first gold medal for Vietnam at ABG5 in beach woodball defeating her teammate Nguyen Huyen Trang.
Medals from beach athletics, beach petanque, beach woodball, ju-jitsu, kurash, marathon swimming and muay are to be awarded today.

Daily highlights and sports summaries will be available on the website as well.
Fans can also watch the Closing Ceremony and six sports including Soccer and Beach Volleyball live through the Vietnamese TV6 and VTV8 channels.
The final medals of the games will be awarded on Sunday, Oct. 2.
The 5th edition of the Asian Beach Games are hosted by the Olympic Council of Asia every two years.
The games began on Sep. 24 and will conclude on Monday, Oct. 3.
