Five years after the end of the bitter civil war which devastated Sri Lanka, the power of sport is healing wounds and bringing peace to the Tamil and Sinhalese communities.
Generations For Peace, the Jordan-based international peace-building organisation which has been working in Sri Lanka since 2007, conducted a filming field visit in 2014 to engage with the Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim families who were directly or indirectly affected by the 26-year civil war.
Once bitter enemies, in this short video, Tamil and Sinhalese communities can be seen using the power of sport to heal the scars of the conflict and break down barriers between the communities.
This year, Generations For Peace will continue to support the difficult post-conflict transition for youth in their communities, conducting further research and providing carefully-facilitated sport-based programmes and activities.
If you believe in the power of sport to reconnect communities and foster acceptance, responsibility and trust, please support our programmes in Sri Lanka by sharing our video with five friends in your own community, using the hashtags #SriLanka #NationalDay #PeaceInSriLanka.
