Venue Tour for Beijing 2022

(ATR) It’s the turn of the major world news agencies to visit Beijing this week for a first look at the venues and facilities for the 2022 Olympics.

Representatives from Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, Reuters and Kyodo News are among those attending the first World Agency Meeting, according to Xinhua.

This week’s gathering of agencies follows the World Broadcasters meeting for Beijing that was held in late February.

The 2022 Winter Games will be held in three competition clusters in and around Beijing.

Beijing will host all the ice events (curling, ice hockey and skating) and four snow events (men’s and women’s snowboard big air and freestyle skiing big air). Legacy venues from Beijing 2008 are being used for 2022, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 guidelines. For example, the Water Cube that was home to the aquatics events in 2008 will be the curling venue in 2022.

Yanqing, located 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Beijing, is to host the alpine skiing and sliding (bobsleigh, skeleton and luge) events.

Past Yanqing in the neighboring Hebei province is Zhangjiakou, located 200 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of Beijing. Zhangjiakou will host all the other snow events (snowboard, freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined and biathlon) in its Chongli district.

The Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, to be completed by the end of this year, will cut travel time from Beijing to Yanqing to 20 minutes, and from Beijing to Zhangjiakou to 50 minutes.
